Air entering an HGV compressor contains moisture.
Once that air is compressed and later cools, moisture can condense inside the pneumatic system. Left untreated, it can contribute to corrosion, freezing and premature wear within valves, reservoirs and braking components.
The air dryer is designed to prevent this.
What does an air dryer do?
The air dryer sits within the compressed-air supply system, normally downstream of the compressor.
Its primary job is to remove moisture before compressed air reaches the vehicle’s reservoirs and pneumatic circuits.
Commercial vehicle manufacturers commonly use desiccant cartridges to absorb moisture from the compressed air.
Knorr-Bremse states that drying is necessary because compression can produce significant condensation and that moisture should be removed to help protect the system from corrosion and freezing.
What is the purge cycle?
An air dryer cannot simply collect moisture indefinitely.
During operation, the dryer periodically purges accumulated moisture and contamination.
Drivers may therefore hear a brief discharge of air from the dryer under normal operation.
Repeated, continuous or abnormal purging, however, may indicate that the system needs investigation.
What does the cartridge do?
The replaceable cartridge contains desiccant material that removes moisture from compressed air.
Some cartridges also incorporate oil separation to help prevent compressor oil and aerosols from reaching downstream pneumatic components.
Over time, the cartridge’s ability to treat compressed air can deteriorate.
Signs an HGV air dryer may need attention
Possible symptoms include:
- Excessive water in air reservoirs
- Unusual or repeated purging
- Air leaking from the dryer
- Moisture-related faults during cold weather
- Contamination downstream
- Slow pressure build-up
- Repeated pneumatic valve problems
None of these symptoms necessarily proves the dryer itself is faulty, but they provide a reason to investigate the air-treatment system.
Air dryer cartridge or complete air dryer?
Not every dryer problem requires replacement of the complete assembly.
Depending on the system and fault, servicing may involve the cartridge or another serviceable component.
Other faults may involve:
- Purge valve
- Heater
- Internal seals
- Pressure-control components
- Integrated air-processing functions
Some modern systems combine air drying and multi-circuit protection in a single Air Processing Unit, making correct identification particularly important.
Why water in the system matters
Moisture can affect far more than the dryer itself.
Possible consequences include:
- Internal corrosion
- Valve contamination
- Reservoir corrosion
- Freezing in cold conditions
- Reduced component life
- Increased risk of pneumatic faults
